Selection Preview: | Quick Mask

The final image shows detail in the coat and softens the skin. I also painted black onto the mask. To that the softening didn't affect the wedding ring.

I liked the sharp appearance of this image, but tried skin-softening everything except the eyes The overall result was a little like the Shadow/Highlights adjustment, lifting the shadows and maintaining the highlights

It's not just skin that you can soften. I felt the man's nostrils were too obvious and softened them by painting white onto that part of the mask.

Harsh, midday sun makes this woman close her eyes I softened the entire image and then painted with a soft, black brush around the eyes and lips

Even with a young child, skin softening can add to the image Here, I only left the eyes sharp

Often it's easier to paint the entire mask black, and then switch to white to reveal softening This image's background was deliberately out of focus and I only wanted to soften a few parts of the man's face
