This recipe darkens and adds contrast to any image—not surprising, since its main ingredient is a pair of inverted layers that use the Hard Light and Hard Mix blending modes. The technique is best suited to low-contrast pictures that don't require a natural-looking result.

1 In the Layers palette, duplicate the original image layer by dragging the background layer onto the "Create a new layer" icon, or use Ctrl/ Crnd-J

2 Using the pull-down blending mode menu in the Layers palette, change the new layer's blending mode to Hard Light (alternatively, use the shortcut Alt/Opt-Shift-H) and name it "Hard Light"

3 Invert the Hard Light layer using Ctrl/Cmd-I

4 Use Ctrl/Cmd-J to make a duplicate of the Hard Light layer Set the new layer's blending mode to Hard Mix either via the pull-down menu or using the shortcut Alt/ Opt-Shift-L Name the layer "Hard Mix "

5 Reduce the Hard Mix fill opacity to 50%

6 Make a duplicate of the Hard Mix layer using Ctrl/ Cmd-J and set the new layer's blending mode to Color Burn (Alt/Opt-Shift-B) Name the new layer "Color Burn."

7 Invert the Color Burn layer using Ctrl/Cmd-I

8 Set the Color Burn's opacity to a value of between 50% and 100%

9 Blur the Hard Light layer with Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur A radius of between 5 and 20

is enough

Towering inferno

The original was shot at midday in Tokyo and the light had a strong blue color cast The two inverted layers make the picture fiercely hot

With this image of a young girl, the result using the original recipe looked overcooked. I got an acceptable result, however, when I left the Hard Mix layer as a positive

To ensure that'Route 66" remained visible, I had to mask it Also see how blurring the Hard Light layer caused a red rim around the "One Way" sign.

For this shot of Monument Valley, I preferred the result I got In this particular example, I preferred to set the top layer to by making the Hard Mix layer positive Lighten mode—Color Burn was too dark
