This recipe works best on low-contrast, slightly drab images and uses the Hard Mix blending mode to inject color. Hard Mix is so powerful that it's often necessary to balance it with another blending mode or reduce its effect using the layer's fill opacity. A small percentage change can make a very big difference to the result, so I find it's more precise to put the cursor in the Fill Opacity box in the Layers palette and use the keyboard's Up and Down arrows. You can very quickly go from primary colors to something that is almost natural—best of all, you can always fine-tune the results.
