Gradient fill layer: You can use

gradients to apply a color in a transition from light to dark. It's useful for creating a dark-edged vignette for some images or a transitioned color background. Figure 10-10 shows different types of gradients.

Gradients are used to create some cool special effects. You can (for example) experiment with how your images look by increasing or reducing the opacity of a fill layer.

l Pattern fill layer: When you create this type of layer, it contains a pattern from the Pattern menu shown in Figure 10-11. Adjust the layer's opacity to strengthen or weaken the pattern effect.
