Batch Renaming Files

When you shoot digitally, the files usually have sequential names for easier sorting but not necessarily for easier identification. You can overwrite the generic names with more creative and identifiable names by group or batch, making the task of renaming hundreds of files a breeze. For example, say that you want to rename all the files in a folder so that the filenames all begin with the date of the shoot followed by the project name and then sequential numbers, and you want to preserve the original extension and the filename in XMP metadata. All this can be done in one neat dialog box (Figure 4-11). To do so, just take the following steps:

1. Select a folder in the Folders panel (if you do not select files, all the files in the folder will be renamed).

2. Choose Tools ^ Batch Rename, or Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows), ^ + Shift+R (Mac OS) to call up the Batch Rename dialog box.

3. Choose an option in the Destination Folder section (Rename in Same Folder is the default option).

4. Choose Text from the pop-up menu in the New Filenames section and enter the date (in the example, the sequence YYMMDD is used).

5. Add another element by clicking the plus button.

6. Choose Text again and type your project name.

7. Add another element by clicking the plus button.

8. Choose Sequence Number and Three Digits from the third pop-up menu.

9. If you are copying to another folder, select Preserve Current Filename in XMP Metadata in the Options section (the option provides good insurance for tracking the original files).

10. When you are happy with the new name, as displayed in the Preview section, click the Rename button.

Depending on the option you selected in Step 3, the files will be renamed in the same folder, moved, or copied to another folder.
