Changing Fill and Opacity

The fill and opacity of the layer content determines not only appearance but also how the layers blend with each other. Furthermore, they determine how the layer effects interact with the layer content. Although you can control the opacity with the Opacity slider (located at the top of the Layers palette) or from the Layer Styles dialog box, the fill levels can be controlled with the Fill command. When you lower the fill level, any effects (Layer Styles) are unaffected. If you have ever tried to apply a Layer Style to a blank, new layer and given up because it did not "stick," try filling the layer first, applying the Layer Style, and then reducing the fill level (Figure 6-11).
