Clearing and Hiding Styles

After you have applied a style, if you need to clear the effects, there's no need to go into the Layer Style dialog box and deselect each style. Simply right-click (Windows), Ctrl-click (Mac OS) the layer tile (not the thumbnail) and then choose Clear Layer Style from the contextual menu, or with the layer selected, choose Layer ^ Layer Style ^ Clear Layer Style. Alternatively, click the y-shaped effects icon and drag to the Trash. There's very little difference between using the contextual menu and dragging to the Trash, but knowing both can enable you to choose the quicker method in your given situation. Sometimes it's quicker to use the Trash; at other times— for example, when it's too far from the layer tile—the contextual method can be quicker.

Although applying a style to multiple layers is relatively easy, clearing styles from multiple layers is not so easy, because there is no command or button to clear styles from multiple selected layers (MSL). As always, there is a way, even if it is not as intuitive as applying styles. What you need to do is select the layers and then click the Default Style (None) thumbnail in the Styles palette; it's the first style in the palette and has a red line drawn diagonally through it. If you cannot see it, you will have to choose Reset Styles from the palette menu and either append the default styles or replace the existing styles.

If you want to hide applied effects temporarily, you can do it in two easy steps:

1. Unfurl the style by clicking the down-pointing triangle next to thef icon on the layer tile.

2. Click the eyeball icon next to Effects to turn off all effects applied to that layer, or one next to the named effect to turn off individually.

You can also turn off all applied effects in the document. To do so, right-click (Windows), Ctrl-click (Mac OS) the f icon and then choose Hide All Effects from the contextual menu; alternatively, choose Layer ^ Layer Style ^ Hide All Effects. The commands are toggles, which means that you can show the hidden effects at any time by choosing Show All Effects from the same menus.
