Creating a Path from a Selection

Should you need to turn a selection into a work path, perhaps to create a vector mask, a clipping path, or just to store it as a path to save on file size, you can do it by clicking the Make Work Path from Selection button in the Paths palette (Figure 10-4).

If the selection is a simple rectangle or oval, you will have a faithful path to work with. However, if it is irregular, you might have to smooth it or use the tolerance setting for all new paths created from selections. To access the setting, choose Make Work Path from the Paths palette menu, or Alt-click (Windows), Opt-click (Mac OS) the Make Work Path from Selection button. Enter a value between 0.5 and 10 pixels in the Make Work Path dialog box and click the OK button. Lower values produce more faithful work paths; higher values produce less faithful work paths.
