The Curves command is probably the most versatile command for correcting tones and colors in an image. Although the Levels command has some similarities, the Curves command lets you make nonlinear adjustments in a way that Levels cannot, nor was designed to do. Because the Curves command is a little bit harder to master than the Levels command, most people shy away from it, which is a shame because they miss out on the fine control that they could exercise over their images when they make adjustments.

This section introduces you gently to some of the not-so-obvious ways of working in the Curves dialog box, and with any luck, you will lose some of your fear and explore its potential to help you fine-tune your images.
