Regrouping and Docking

To regroup palettes, decide which one will be the foremost palette in the group and drag it by the tab out of the present group. Next, grab a palette by the tab that you would like to group, hover it over the previous one, and drop it when the outline turns black (Figure 2-18). Apart from grouping the palettes this way, you can also group them vertically. To do so, drag the palette by the grabber bar, position it below another palette, and let it snap to it.

Here are some suggested groupings (Figure 2-19). The most often used palettes are arranged at the forefront of the groups, and the remainder of the palettes are docked in the well to conserve screen real estate. Having grouped the palettes, when you come to align them next to the edge of the screen, hold down the Shift key to make the groups snap against the edge.

TIP You can arrange your favorite palettes at the bottom of the screen in collapsed groups (to collapse, double-click the grabber bar) and then double-click their tabs to expand them as required.
