Transforming Masks

By default, masks are linked to the underlying layer content. When you move or transform the layer content, the mask moves and transforms in tandem. However, should you need to move or transform the mask by itself, the link can be broken easily.

To unlink a layer mask, click the link between the layer and the mask thumbnails (Figure 8-9). To restore the link, click the link icon again. After being unlinked, the mask can be transformed or repositioned independently of the layer content by using the transform commands in the Edit^ Transform submenu. You can also use keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+T (Windows), ^+T (Mac OS) to invoke Free Transform and then use modifier keys on the bounding box handles.
