Viewing Full, Compact, or Ultra-Compact Mode

Although selecting the different viewing modes is intuitive, you can easily lose your footing if you don't know how the modes interact with each other. With that little forewarning in mind, take a look at the different options in detail and see how to switch between the viewing modes.

■ Full Mode—By default, Bridge opens in full view mode. This is probably the mode you will use most. However, you may want to try the two other display modes ; both have their uses. They are Compact mode and Ultra-Compact mode.

■ Compact Mode—This mode displays the toolbar and content while hiding the panels. To switch to Compact mode, click the icon in the upper-right corner of the toolbar (Figure 4-1) or press Ctrl+Enter (Windows), ^+Return (Mac OS).

■ Ultra-Compact Mode—This mode displays the toolbar while hiding the content and the panels.

When you're in Compact mode, you can switch to Ultra-Compact mode by clicking the Switch to Ultra-Compact icon in the toolbar (Figure 4-2) or return to Full mode by pressing Ctrl+Enter (Windows), ^+Return (Mac OS).

The Switch to Ultra-Compact mode icon is added after you are in Compact mode; this icon isn't available in Full mode. A button for pop-up menus is also added, similar to palette menus. This contains the menu item Compact Window Always on Top, which cannot be accessed from anywhere else. If you don't want the Compact mode window to always stay on top of other windows, deselect the item.

When you're in Ultra-Compact mode, you can switch to Compact mode by clicking the appropriate icon on the toolbar (Figure 4-3). Alternatively, you have the choice of returning to Full mode by either clicking the appropriate icon or pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Enter (Windows), ^+Return (Mac OS). Whichever mode you jump from to full mode, when next you use the keyboard shortcut, the view will return to that mode. For example, if you jump from Compact mode, you will return to Compact mode, but if you jump back from Ultra-Compact mode, you will return to Ultra-Compact mode. This feature can lead to confusion unless you are aware of the different view modes and their interaction on each other.

NOTE If you have Creative Suite, you cannot switch to Compact or Ultra-Compact modes while you are in the Bridge Center.
