Layer masks can be turned off temporarily, or disabled, by pressing the Shift key while clicking the mask thumbnail. When you click, Photoshop adds a red cross to the thumbnail to show that the mask is temporarily disabled. The shortcut is a toggle, meaning that you can use it to enable a disabled mask. Alternatively, right-click (Windows), Ctrl-click (Mac OS) the mask thumbnail and choose Disable Layer Mask from the contextual menu. To enable a disabled mask this way, call up the contextual menu again and choose Enable Layer Mask.
