Here you have two beautiful Joshua tree blooms captured in morning sunlight. (This image is available for download from the Web site associated with this book.)

The blooms here are in good focus. The background is somewhat out of focus (the result of an attempt to defocus the background by using a small f-stop value), but it isn't blurred enough to get the full defocus effect. In addition, the background is very busy — look at all those rock cliffs sporting interesting colors and shapes.

The cliffs, as nice as they are, tend to steal attention away from the blooms. The result is an image that is too confusing, with not enough focus on the Joshua tree blooms themselves — supposedly the image's main subject. The solution here is to defocus the background (as the photographer was trying to do in the first place).
