Adjust Brightness and Contrast with the Curves Dialog

The Curves dialog box, like the histogram, allows you to edit and redistribute image data. But unlike the histogram, the Curves dialog box offers no graphical display of the data. So using the dialog box takes a bit of imagination.

Because it is graphical, you'll tend to use the histogram to set highlights and shadows as in the preceding task. But with the Curves dialog box, you'll be more likely to make changes in the image data that exists between the highlight and shadow points.

One common use of the Curves dialog box is to adjust brightness and contrast, as demonstrated in the following steps. I start with the histogram-corrected barn image.
