Would you like to transplant the Great Pyramid of Egypt to downtown Paris? Or perhaps you're just interested in removing your ex-brother-in-law from a family photo. Photographic masters of the past spent hours figuring ways to combine images in the camera, or spent days sandwiching negatives or transparencies, cutting film or prints to pieces, or using other tedious tasks to build great images from multiple originals. Compositing still requires skill with Photoshop, but you can do things in a few hours that were virtually impossible to achieve only 20 years ago. The scene shown in Figure 1.5 doesn't exist in the real world, but it took me only five minutes to fake it using Photoshop, using the original photos shown in Figure 1.6.
