Digital cameras store their images in a few ways, in the camera's internal memory, on memory cards, or a combo of both. Whether your memory card is CompactFlash (shown in Figure 20-2), SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Secure Digital/MultiMedia, x-D-Picture, or some other flavor, having more cards means having more photos.

Card sizes currently range from 16 to 2GB (gigabytes), with a 4GB card just around the corner. The sizes available depend on your particular type of card. I recommend buying a card with the largest memory you can afford (or the largest memory that your camera can handle). Here are a few additional considerations:

For the budget conscious: If budget is a concern and you're a casual photographer, you can get away with 32 to 64MB cards.

^ For photoholics: If you're using a high-resolution camera, or shooting in high-resolution mode, you should really consider 256 to 512MB cards.

Although cards aren't as cheap as film, you can use them over and over, and they last for years.
