Reconnecting to missing files

In your zeal for organizing, you may move a file, such as a photo, video, or audio clip, from its original location in Album to a new one that is outside the Album realm. If you do so, Album will not be able to find it and will consider it missing. It will then place a File Missing icon on top of your thumbnail in the Photo Well. This is not a disaster, by any means, but it is a minor inconvenience. All you have to do is use the Reconnect Missing File command and show Album where the file now resides.

You may choose to ignore the file missing icon thinking you know darn well the file isn't missing. But the next time you try and print, export, e-mail, edit, or do anything that requires the original file, the Reconnect Missing Files dialog box will appear automatically, forcing you to take action to direct Album to the file's new location.

To reconnect a single missing file, follow these steps:

1. Select a file that has a file missing icon in the Photo Well.

2. Choose EditOReconnect Missing File.

You also can right-click and select the command from the context-sensitive menu.

The Reconnect Missing Files dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 7-12. The missing file, along with a thumbnail preview and file info, appears on the left side. The right side of the dialog box shows the original folder where the image was once stored.

3. In the Browse for Missing Files section of the dialog box, navigate to folder where the file now resides and click the Reconnect button.

A thumbnail preview of a possible match is displayed when you select a new folder.

The Last Action pop-up menu lists the file that has been reconnected.

The Reconnect Missing File command does not work for files that have been renamed outside of Album or deleted.

Here's how to reconnect multiple missing files:

1. Choose FileO Reconnect All Missing Files.

You don't have to select the images in the Photo Well. Album checks through your catalog, and all files it finds as missing are listed in the Reconnect Missing Files dialog box that appears.

2. Select one or more of the missing files in the list.

As with a single file, Album displays the thumbnail preview and last known folder location on the left side of the dialog box (refer to Figure 7-6).

3. In the Browse for Missing Files section, navigate to the folder containing the missing files and then click the Reconnect button.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for all missing files.

The Last Action pop-up menu shows a list of the files reconnected. Any files that couldn't be reconnected remain in the missing files list. If you mistakenly reconnect to the wrong file, click the Undo button right away. Or, later, once back in the Photo Well, you can rename the erroneous file or delete it from the catalog.
