Digital photographers adore the ability to remove nasty red eye from pictures. Red eye occurs when light from a camera's flash bounces off the back of the retina of the eye and back into the camera's lens. It often occurs in low lighting situations and/or when the flash is too close to the lens of the camera, as is often the case with digital and point-and-shoot cameras.

At the source, you can prevent red eye by making sure your camera is set to no red eye mode. Check your documentation to see if your camera has the capability. You also can ask your subjects to look away from the camera. If you are shooting indoors, turn on all the lights in the room. This will help shrink the pupils of the eye. You also can ensure that the flash of your camera is mounted above or to the side of the lens. If you can't move (or remove) the flash (at least not without duct tape), Album offers an easy solution after the fact. Enter the Fix Photo dialog box.

To remove red eye, follow these simple steps in the Fix Photo dialog box:

1. Using the Zoom In button and the scroll bars, navigate to the offending red eyes.

2. Click the Red Eye Removal button in the Editing Options list in the upper-right side of the Fix Photo dialog box.

A rectangle appears on the image preview, as shown in Figure 11-11.

3. Adjust the rectangle by placing your cursor (which appears as a double-headed arrow) and dragging the handles to size the rectangle.

You can place your cursor inside the rectangle and drag with the hand icon to move it. Frame the offending eyes fairly tightly.

4. When you have adjusted the rectangle, click the Red Eye Removal button again. Like cropping, you also can press the Enter key or double-click inside the rectangle.

If you're lucky, the red eyes have been replaced with black pupils once again, as seen in Figure 11-12.

To really see the great red eye removal effort of Album, check out Color Plate 11-4 in the color insert. Album not only got rid of the little girl's red eyes, but also fixed the eyes on the Siamese kitten.

If your eyes are still looking a tad eerie, first try repeating the steps. On some images, I found that I had to do it two or three times before I completely got rid of the red. If it still doesn't work, you may require the extra strength editing power of Photoshop Elements or Photoshop. See more on editing in these two programs in Chapter 12.

5. Click OK to exit the Fix Photo dialog box.
