► Caution

When the Type tool is selected in the toolbox, many of the options in the top menus are unavailable. So if you need to create a new file, for example, you must first click off the Type tool by selecting a tool such as Move before choosing File | New.

The key difference between the two Type tools and the two Type Mask tools is this: the normal Type tools create new layers to house the text they create, while the Type Mask tools simply create selections (remember those dancing ants?) without creating layers. (The following illustration helps point out the difference visually.) Once you make a selection with a Type Mask tool, you can create a new layer, if needed, on which you can fill the selection.
