Photoshop defaults to showing the boundaries of your selection in black and white, where the white areas are within the selection and the black areas are outside of the selection. When you first open the Color Range window, you may notice that some colors are highlighted already within the preview pane. This is because Photoshop automatically selects any colors within the image that match the current color in the foreground color swatch of the toolbox.

To add to the selection of colors, hold down the SHIFT key while clicking, or click the Add To Sample button before selecting additional areas of color. To subtract from the selection of colors, hold down the ALT (Windows) or OPTION (Mac) key while clicking, or click the Subtract From Sample button before selecting additional areas of color.

When you're finished, you can click OK to return to your image, where the areas of color will be selected. Or you can click Save to save the selection for future use.

Clicking Load allows you to load another selection in the Color Range tool, where you can then add to or subtract from the selection as needed.
