► Note

Text layers are the only types of layers that are given names automatically by default. In this case, Photoshop names a text layer with the beginning of the text on that layer.

TRY IT To name a layer as it's being created, first make sure the Layers palette is open by choosing Windows I Layers and then perform any of the following tasks:

• Click the triangle in the upper-right corner of the palette and choose New Layer.

• Hold down the ALT (Windows) or OPTION key (Mac) while clicking the New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette.

• Choose Layer I New I Layer from the top menu.

• Press SHIFT-CTRL-N (Windows) or SHIFT-CMD-N (Mac).

In each of these four cases, you're presented with a dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 6-3, in which you can give the layer a suitable name, as well as change its color, mode, and opacity.
