QUICK TIP

You can also rotate between the different type tools by pressing SHIFT-T multiple times until the tool you wish to use is displayed in the Type tool spot in the toolbox.

TRY IT To create a selection of text, click and hold on the Type tool in the toolbox to reveal a pop-up menu of additional tools. Select the third or fourth tool—the Horizontal Type Mask tool or the Vertical Type Mask tool—depending on whether you want to create horizontal or vertical text selections.

Then, click inside the boundaries of your canvas wherever you want to create text and begin typing. You can customize the font details, including how the text is aligned on the canvas, either in the Options bar or the Character palette (choose Window | Character).

When you are satisfied with your text, click the check mark at the right end of the Options bar to turn it into a selection. Alternatively, you can click any other tool in the toolbox or on a layer in the Layers palette to turn it into a selection. To cancel the text layer, click the X button at the right end of the Options bar or press CTRL-. (Windows) or CMD-. (Mac).
