► Note

The shape tools were introduced in Chapter 5, because they are edited with the pen tools, which are commonly used to make selections. For a comparison of how the shape and pen tools work with paths, refer to Chapter 5.

There are five permanent shape tools—Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, and Line— and one Custom Shape tool, which can be used to access any of the vast number of other shapes that ship with the program. Figure 8-11 shows where each of the shape tools are located in the toolbox.

Figure 8-11 The Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, Line, and Custom Shape tools are grouped with the Rectangle tool in the toolbox.

When a shape tool is selected from the toolbox, the options bar at the top of the screen is displayed, similar to the one shown in the following illustration.

The various settings for each of the shape tools are accessed by clicking the inverted triangle to the right of the shape buttons in the Options bar, and are discussed in Table 8-3 and throughout this chapter.
