Add Adjustment and Fill Layers to Adjust Color on Single Layers Instead of Entire Images

When you want to experiment with the color of a specific layer or group of layers, as opposed to the entire image, you can use an adjustment or fill layer. The biggest benefit of using these special layers to make color changes is that adjustment and fill layers can easily be deleted or edited whenever you change your mind.

The key difference between adjustment and fill layers is that, by default, adjustment layers affect those beneath them, while fill layers do not. Also by default, both these types of layers have layer masks associated with them that specify which pixels the color changes affect.

There are three types of fill layers and 11 types of adjustment layers, as outlined in Tables 6-5 and 6-6.
