Align Text on Multiple Layers

Suppose you're working on a design for which you created several layers of text, each with a single word on it, that you needed to align down the center of the canvas, as shown in Figure 7-6. If you link those layers together in Photoshop, you can easily align them with just a few clicks of the mouse.

TRY IT To align two or more layers, first choose Window I Layers to make sure the Layers palette is visible. Then click once on one of the layers to activate it in the Layers palette. Click in the empty box next to each of the other layer names that you want to link to the active layer. (When layers are linked to the currently active layer, a small chain icon appears in the previously empty box next to the layer's name.)

Figure 7-6 After drawing a guide in the center of my canvas and specifying the appropriate alignment and snap options, I can easily align my text in the center of the image.

After your layers are linked, decide how to align them and choose Layer I Align Linked and the appropriate option. For details on how each particular alignment option works, see the tip titled "Align and Distribute Elements on Multiple Layers" in Chapter 6.

TRY IT If you want to align the layers with a specific spot or axis in the image canvas, draw a guide in that location. (To draw a guide, first press CTRL-R on Windows or CMD-R on Mac to display the rulers. Then, click and drag into the canvas from one of those rulers to create a guide.)

Choose View I Snap To I Guides and, with the Move tool, move the text from one of the layers toward the guide to which you want it aligned. Because the other layers are linked to the one you're moving, those will also move and align with the guide.
