Create a Seamless Graphical Background Tile

A seamless graphical background tile is typically a small graphical image that, when tiled by the browser, appears as one large texture filling the entire window. Graphical backgrounds are a bit easier to make seamless than the photographic images discussed in previous tips.

For example, suppose instead of the photographic image of the diaper pins used in the earlier tip "Create a Seamless Photographic Background Tile," I wanted to use a graphical representation of diaper pins. I could vary the size and angle of the diaper pins to create a wallpaper-like texture for the background of my page, such as the texture shown in Figure 4-7.

TRY IT To begin, create a new file (choose File I New) measuring 200 pixels in width and height. Then, use the Paint Bucket tool to fill the background of the file with the color of your choosing. In this case, I chose a pale yellow from the web-safe color palette.

Figure 4-7 A seamless graphical background tile can be a great way to add a little texture to a web page without drawing attention away from the main content of the page.
