The Layers palette includes the option to view a thumbnail of the contents of a particular layer, to the left of that layer's name. While thumbnails can cause the Layers palette to be longer, they can be quite helpful in determining the contents of a layer—particularly if the layer hasn't been named.
TRY IT To turn on thumbnail views in the Layers palette, first choose Window | Layers to make sure the Layers palette is visible. Then, click the triangle in the upper-right corner of the palette to display a flyout menu of options. Choose Palette Options from the bottom of that menu to reveal the options shown next.
From this window, you can specify whether to display thumbnail views at all, and if so, the size at which they should be displayed.
