Use the Warp Text Command for Curved Lines of Text

When simple rotations or distortions aren't enough, the Warp Text command can be used to distort type into shapes such as arcs—like the one in Figure 7-8 along the edge of the watermelon rind. In fact, the Warp Text command includes 15 shapes for warping text, as shown in the following illustration.

As with transformations performed by the Free Transform command (as discussed in the previous tip), warped type remains editable in Photoshop. Furthermore, you can change the shape of the warp itself at any time.

TRY IT To warp text in Photoshop, first use the Type tool to create a new type layer containing the text you want to warp. Make sure the Layers palette is visible by choosing Windows I Layers, and click once on the type layer in question to activate it. Then click the Warp Text button in the Options bar.

or choose Layer I Type I Warp Text to display the Warp Text dialog box. Select the warp style

Specify the orientation of the warp effect (not the text itself); vertical rotates it 90 degrees

Allows you to alter the horizontal perspective of the warp effect, which defaults to being in the middle of the text layer; positive numbers move the origin point to the left of the text while negative numbers move it to the right or choose Layer I Type I Warp Text to display the Warp Text dialog box. Select the warp style

Specify how far the bend of the arc/shape should extend; negative numbers take the bend in the opposite direction

Allows you to alter the vertical perspective of the warp effect, which defaults to being in the center of the text layer; positive numbers move the origin point above the text; negative numbers, below
