Creating a Fade Effect

In addition to being able to change the font, size, color, and shape of your text, you might want to create the illusion that type is fading away in order to add an element of mystery to your masterpiece. You can create this effect using a type layer, a layer mask, and the Gradient Tool. You can apply this effect to part of a type layer, if you want the text to look as if it's fading in or out, or to the entire layer.

QUICKTIP

Type does not have to be rasterized to create the fade effect.
