What You'll Do

In this lesson, you'll crop out unnecessary imagery. You'll also add a layer style to enhance the image, and draw attention away from the background.

Evaluating What's Next

Every image has its own unique problems, and you'll probably run into a few final challenges when coordinating an image to work with other elements in a final publication or finished product. The last step in preparing an image for production is to decide what final fixes are necessary so that it serves its intended purpose.

Cropping an Image

Sometimes an image contains more content than is necessary. In the image of the swimmers, there's too much water. Of course, you have to determine the central focus of the image and what it is you want the reader to see. Is the subject of the image the water, or the swimmers? If your image suffers from too much of the wrong imagery, you can help your reader by getting rid of imagery that is not needed and possibly distracting. This type of deletion not only removes imagery, but changes the size and shape of the image. You can make this type of change using the Crop Tool on the toolbox. When you make a selection within an image, you can use cropped area settings (the Shield check box and the Opacity list arrow) on the options bar to see how the image will appear after it has been cropped.

Adding Layer Styles

Image layers can also benefit from the same layer styles that can be applied to type layers, such as a Drop Shadow.
