Distressed Photo

In typical fashion, I stumbled across this technique while trying to get more out of my filters. I frequently will push filters into situations they weren't designed for. As a case in point, we're going to use Flaming Pear's cool cosmos/starscape generator, Glitterato, to distress a photo. You'll find a fully functional demo of the plug-in on the book's disc.

Step 1. Open the target photo.

Duplicate the photo by pressing la+0 (^B+O).

Blur this copy using Gaussian Blur (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur). I used a 10-pixel blur.

Duplicate the blurred layer by pressing la+0 (^B+O). Set the blurred layer to Multiply mode.

Run the Glitterato filter and choose the Yellow Weave preset (Filter>Flaming Pear>Glitterato). Scale to taste with the Free Transform Command.

Step 6. Soften the Glitterato layer by running the Median filter (Filter>Noise>Median). I used a 2-pixel average.

Step 7. Select the Move tool by pressing V. We need a tool without blend modes for the next shortcut to work.

Step 8. Cycle through the blend modes by pressing or

Bi j. Adjust the opacity of the layer to taste. I used the Screen mode set to 50% opacity.

Step 9. Add a Gradient Map adjustment layer set to the Black-to-White gradient. Experiment with blending modes and opacity to achieve the desired look.

Step 10. Add a Saturation Adjustment Layer. Strip 70% to 90% of the chroma out of the layer.
