Video Production Made Easy
If you own a TrueVision NuVista+ board or some other 32-bit device that enables chroma keying, you can select the Use Video Alpha check box to view a television signal in the transparent area behind a layer. Unless you work in video production, you needn't worry about this option.
I've been in video production for about 20 years and spent time in news as a cameraman, reporter, anchor, producer, technical director, and director. However, I've spent the majority of my career in post-production, doing military, corporate, and commercial editing and finishing, said Oleksy. I was first introduced to the Avid back in the 5.0 days and haven't looked back.
Blue-screen and green-screen compositing have become more and more popular, with higher-quality prosumer DV cameras and video editing software becoming more accessible. But sometimes stuff gets in the way you want to edit out something that falls in front of or next to your blue screen. A simple crop or mask of the scene might eliminate the majority of the unwanted materials. If the shot has too much movement in an asymmetrical pattern or was shot at an angle in the frame, then a combination of techniques, such as garbage mattes and rotoscoping, may be necessary.
While nonlinear video editing saves time and adds flexibility, the nonlinear mode of the History palette is not as useful. By default, the nonlinear option is disabled, for good reason. The nonlinear mode opens up an incredible amount of increased flexibility, but making sense of that flexibility often becomes a brainteaser not worth solving.
Adobe After Effects and Apple Motion can work with 16-bit images. Starting with Photoshop CS, Adobe now supports layered 16-bit images. However, when working in 16-bit mode, many of the editing tools and filters do not work. You will most frequently work in 8 Bits Channel mode. Additionally, video editing systems vary on their ability to import 16-bit images. Some will only import a 16-bit image as a flattened file others will not import it at all.
My jobs have always required me to shoot and edit the video projects I am assigned. So I have evolved from a shooter editor to a producer and director of my own projects. I started in the television news media as a videographer, said Rubino. I moved from news programming into shooting and editing cable TV programs for a number of years. I now work on corporate and educational videos that vary from two to forty minutes in length.
If your NLE or compositing application has a flicker filter (such as After Effect's Reduce Interlace Flicker effect or Final Cut Pro's Flicker filter) you may choose to skip this step. But remember, a 10-second clip means you are running a filter between 250 and 300 times (depending on video format) versus only one processing pass in Photoshop.
Recently, creating broadcast-safe graphics has gotten trickier. Many video editing tools have begun to automatically adjust graphics to make them broadcast-safe during import. The system will automatically remap the white and black points to a broadcast-safe value. For example, both Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro
Develop tutorials for leading plug-ins. Despite this love for digital, he warns against the fast-and-cheap aspect often associated with modern video production. Most video editing software has a very distinct look to its graphics. I call it the 'DV' look. It's downright cheap looking. If you surf through local TV ads, you'll see evidence of this all too often. Buzzing-Awkward-Text that just looks thrown on last minute. For backgrounds and titles, Photoshop is invaluable, said Jayse. If someone's still using marble or gradient backgrounds in pink or blue with big beveled boxes just because that's what comes built into their video editing program, they need to invest in Photoshop and create something a bit more modern and different. Respect yourself and your work enough to take it up a notch.
This mode has 256 possible values per color channel (2 to the eight power). This is the most common mode used by video editing applications (although some are starting to offer 10- and even 12-bit editing). For these higher-end systems you will want to build in 16-bit mode.
Digital cameras are generally more expensive than their analog companions. Remember though that you can get by with a camera resolution as low as a 2.1 megapixels. The convenience offered by a digital camera might just help you make a deadline. The elimination (and cost) of developing and scanning makes these a viable choice for video pros. I encourage you to add a digital still camera to your video production equipment it will come in handy both in the field and back in the office.
Adobe's Photoshop is an application that changed the way we all think about image editing. Adobe Premiere was one of the first software-based video editing applications on the scene. It's only natural that they would be designed to work hand-in-hand. Converting and processing still images and graphics and creating graphic elements and masks for compositing will always be a critical part of creating video programs. Whether you're creating a video for deployment on tape, CD-ROM, or DVD, Photoshop is a critical accessory for high quality video production with Adobe Premiere.
The quantity of pixels along the height and width of a raster image determines its screen (or display) size. Older computer monitors display 72 pixels per inch (ppi) newer monitors often display 96 ppi or higher. These display settings will often vary, ranging higher or lower, depending on your computer's video card. In contrast, video monitors are not variable. Your video format will use a specific-sized graphic you cannot pack extra pixels in or change the dimensions of your audience's televisions. I'll go deeper into setting up pixel dimensions and pixel aspect ratio later in this chapter.
Also known as MJPEG, this format is an extension of the JPEG standard. In an MJPEG file, each frame in the video is stored with the JPEG still-image lossy compression applied. Because each frame is captured, the quality is high, and you can easily edit the files in a desktop video-editing program such as Adobe Premiere. MJPEG is a common format used by digital video recorders and often used in security surveillance cameras. The newer MJPEG 2000 format is an international standard and has found a market in professional video production, especially in the fields of medical imaging, mapping, remote surveillance and sensing, and mobile phones.

I cannot promise you overnight success, although I can tell you that this book can make you faster and more confident with each chapter you complete. To get the most out of this book, it will help if you and I are operating in a similar environment. I will make suggestions on how to configure Photoshop to operate more like the video editing system that you are used to. So please take the extra time to reset Photoshop.
The simple way to choose an image size is to use the Preset and Size pop-up menus. The Preset pop-up lists several categories Clipboard, Default Photoshop Size, U.S. Paper, International Paper, Photo, Web, Mobile & Devices, Film & Video, and Custom. After you choose a Preset option, the Size menu becomes available so that you can choose among the sizes in that category. For example, when you choose U.S. Paper from the Preset menu, your Size choices are Letter, Legal, and Tabloid. Photoshop CS3 also includes a wide selection of TV and video formats, including PAL and HDTV screen sizes, as well as sizes customarily used with phones, handheld organizers, and other devices. Of course, you can also specify the size of your image width and height in pixels, inches, centimeters, points, picas, or columns across. These units are available in pop-up menus that you can access by clicking the small arrow next to the unit of measurement (see Figure 1.2).
Great resource for advanced courses in screen graphics or video production. This book is based on techniques that I have taught over the years. I am a college instructor, as well as a frequent speaker at industry conferences and training events. This book and the accompanying DVD are intended to be a teaching guide, a reference book, and a source of inspiration. It is my hope to make your job easier and your projects more professional looking. To move you towards this goal, I will occasionally take related tangents. Photoshop is a companion to many other applications, so don't be surprised to dip into specific nonlinear editing systems (NLEs) or even After Effects. Photoshop integration is an essential skill in taking your video editing and motion graphic skills to a higher level.
If you are not interested in expanding your craft beyond classic video editing, you may soon be facing some fierce competition in the marketplace (if you're not already), said Mitchell. Though forever a staple of video editing, cuts and dissolves alone just don't cut and dissolve it anymore. At least not with the clients I've
